Descriptive Video Works Congratulates Canadian Talent

Award season may have culminated south of the border with the Oscars but the biggest event on the Canadian entertainment calendar is still to come, the Canadian Screen Awards!

Descriptive Video Works is thrilled to be providing the live video description for the Canadian Screen Awards which will be airing on Sunday March 9, 2014 at 8pm on CBC and as with last year, the show will be hosted by Martin Short. Our live video description services were a huge hit with vision impaired audiences recently when we were honored to have described the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics as well as the men’s Gold Medal Hockey Game. With so many Canadian stars breaking out their best fashions this coming Sunday at the Screen Awards our live video describers will undoubtedly be given a good challenge in bringing the proceedings to life for all our non-sighted viewers across the country.

We send our congratulations to ALL the Canadian Screen Awards nominees especially the shows which we are proud to have made accessible to the blind and partially sighted audience by providing the described video. The shows we have worked on that have been nominated for awards include the following:

Arctic Air

Currently half way through it’s third season, we have been describing the adventures of the Yellowknife based maverick airline since the very first episode. The show is nominated in the Digital Media Category for Best Cross-Platform Project – Fiction.

The Amazing Race Canada

In it’s inaugural season the hit reality series picked up three nominations including Best Photography in a Lifestyle or Reality/Competition Program or Series, Best Writing and Best Cross-Platform Project – Non-Fiction.

Highway Thru Hell

Given the tough winter we’ve experienced this year, the rescue and towing company featured in this show set along the Coquihalla Highway in B.C. must have been kept very busy! The team behind the show have been rewarded with noms for Best Direction and Best Picture Editing in a Reality/Competition Program.

The Liquidator

Also nominated in for Best Direction and Best Editing in the Reality category, we can’t help but wonder if the deal-hunting star of the show, Jeff Schwarz, will try selling his award if he wins…

Season 2 of the police procedural drama series premieres this Thursday on CTV. The first Season has three Canadian Screen Award noms including Best Dramatic Series, Best Direction in a Dramatic Series and Best Performance in a Guest Role (awarded to Molly Parker for her work in the episode “Public Enemy”).

Nerve Center

The reality series that takes its viewers behind the scenes of complex organizations, utilities and special events has kept our writers busy the last couple of months. The show has a nom in the Best Direction in a Reality Program category.

As the longest-running current affairs/newsmagazine program in North America and the third longest-running Canadian television program, W5 continues to showcase hard-hitting, controversial stories. This year, the show is nominated in four categories including Best News Information Series, Best News Information Program and Host or Interviewer (to Victor Malarek for the story “The Throwaway Children”) and Best News Information Segment (for the story “The Survivor”).

2013 Much Music Video Awards

Describing Korean pop sensation PSY performing his hit single “Gangam Style” was among one of the more interesting challenges for our descriptive video writers last year! The colorful awards show has noms in four categories including Best Music Program, Best Photography in a Variety or Performing Arts Program, Best Production Design or Art Direction in a Non-Fiction Program and Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program (for the aforementioned viral sensation PSY).

Primeval New World

Rounding out the Canadian Screen Awards nominees who we were privileged to have provided described video services to in 2013 is the sci-fi show Primeval New World which sadly was cancelled after only one season. The show provided many an action-packed moment with dinosaurs invading contemporary Vancouver and is well deserving of its nomination for Best Visual Effects.

Congratulations again to all the nominees! Tune in to CBC at 8pm on Sunday March 9 to find out who takes home the awards.

Congratulations 2013 Leo Award Nominees!

This weekend marks the 15th Anniversary of the Leo Awards whose mandate is to celebrate excellence in film and television in British Columbia. The best and brightest talent in our home Province will be dressing themselves up and walking the red carpet at the Westin Bayshore Hotel for a celebration gala and we are delighted to see many of our clients nominated this year in a multitude of categories.

Arctic Air

We are so proud to be able to make this successful TV series accessible with our audio description. The second season of Arctic Air recently aired it’s final episode but CBC has already announced that it will be back for a 3rd Season in 2014 – and a good thing too since it is up for a whopping 14 Leo Awards including Best TV Drama, Best Male Performer (Kevin McNulty), Best Female Performer (Pascale Hutton) Best Supporting Performer noms for John Reardon and Emillie Ullerup and several noms in a variety of craft categories.

Primeval: New World

Like many others, we were shocked and immensely disappointed to hear that Primeval New World, a terrific Sci-Fi show, had been cancelled and would not be returning for a 2nd season. We had a blast providing the descriptive video for the entire series and it’s great to see the makers being honored by the Leo Awards with 6 nominations including Screenwriting, Picture Editing, Visual Effects and Lead Performer and Supporting nods for Niall Matter and Miranda Frigon.

Ice Pilots NWT

Ice Pilots is now in its 4th Season and they can add to their numerous other awards they’ve amassed over the years with three nominations including Best Documentary Series.

Like Ice Pilots, Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag has also reached an impressive 4 Season run and we were delighted to finally make their entertaining and informative cooking show accessible with their latest run of episodes. Season 4 is nominated in 4 categories including Best Information or Lifestyle Program, Best Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Hosts. In the same category, other shows we have provided descriptive audio for, Get Stuffed and The Liquidator also have nominations for Best Program, Direction and Cinematography.

Mr. Young

Leading the category of Youth Or Children’s Program Or Series, Mr. Young, (recently renewed for a 4th Season) has an impressive 7 nominations for Directing, Screenwriting and Performer with actors Gig Morton, Brendan Meyer and Milo Shandel all receiving noms.

We’d like to wish all the nominees our heartfelt congratulations. It is an honor for us to be able to make all of your amazing work accessible to blind and vision-impaired audiences across Canada and beyond. We’d also like to give special congratulations to one of our own, Neil Every, who is one of our writers and whose comedy webseries Fools For Hire is nominated for a Best Performer award and Best Webseries. You can check out the show here. Good luck Neil and we hope by the end of Saturday night you’ll be holding a shiny Leo Award!

A Dose of Reality!

After two weeks straight of competition, edge-of-the-seat excitement, heartache, inspiration and human triumph that has been the amazing London 2012 Olympics, there’s nothing better than to unwind with some fun Reality TV shows.

Descriptive Video Works is happy to bring not one but three different Reality TV shows to the blind and vision impaired.

The Liquidator

According to the official show page on the OLN website “The Liquidator offers a ringside seat to Jeff Schwarz’ fast paced, high stakes, buy and sell world. From getting the tip and checking out the goods to making the deal and finding a buyer, we see it all… and it isn’t always pretty”.

We couldn’t agree more. The Liquidator offers an entertaining fly-on-the-wall look at self-proclaimed “Liquidation King”, Jeff Schwarz, who in buying low and selling high, has worked his way up the ladder from nothing to make his company Direct Liquidation the largest liquidator store in the West.

The Liquidator is produced by Anaid Productions, and can be seen Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT on OLN.

Get Stuffed!

If you’re looking for something a little whackier, then this series which we’re also describing may be more to your taste, no pun intended… Get Stuffed follows Erin, Josh, 6-Pack and Kalyn as they go head-to-head in some of the craziest competitions on the planet such as ostrich racing and the World Pizza Games in Las Vegas. As for where the title of the show comes from, well, that’s in reference to the punishment that is doled out to whoever loses the challenge.

Losers must eat and “get stuffed” on the best and biggest feasts out there. Featured punishments include The Ukrainian Combo Platter served at Julia’s in Manitoba (15 assorted perogies, two handmade cabbage rolls, sweet and sour meatballs, grilled garlic sausage, coleslaw and topped with sour cream, bacon and fried onions) or the legendary Quadruple Bypass Burger – a meal served up at the infamous Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas. The top menu item weighs in with a staggering 9,000 calories  thanks to its 4 half-pound patties, eight slices of cheese, one tomato, half an onion and a bun coated with lard…

Get Stuffed is produced by Worldwide Bag Media and airs Tuesday at 9pm ET/6pm PT on OLN.

Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag

If Get Stuffed is a little too much for you to- well, stomach, then  Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag, also produced by Worldwide Bag Media might be just what you’re looking for.  Now in its fourth season, Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag is hosted by Vancouverites Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic the same product test-driving twosome behind the hit show The Shopping Bags.

Each episode centers around a different cookbook which the hosts select recipes from and attempt to create, then bravely showcase, to an equally brave guest chef who tastes their delectable dishes and scores their efforts out of 10. Based on the guest Chef’s evaluation, Anna and Kristina determine whether the featured cook book gets the “A & K Seal of Approval”. As well as testing out a different cookbook each episode, Anna and Kristina also test out different products featured in the many recipes they attempt and share oodles of culinary tips and advice.

Season 4 of Anna & Kristina’s Grocery Bag premieres on OWN in late September.

Stay up to date on all the premiere dates for new shows we are providing audio description for don’t forget to check us out on Facebook here.
